The Department of Community Health Sciences, Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. The scientist being sought will have a research concentration in population/public health, equity and policy.
This population/public health scientist will have research skills and expertise relevant to population/public health, equity and policy. This may include, for example, population specific application of emerging approaches including new methods for assessing social determinants of health, targeted population health strategies ensuring equity, participatory research and community engagement, and interdisciplinary approaches that prioritize mixed methods, although the full spectrum of public health researchers are encouraged to apply. This position is part of a broader Cumming School of Medicine Strategy for Precision Medicine, including precision public health. Precision public health focuses on the targeted and detailed characterization of context-specific social determinants of health, so that targeted population-health interventions can be designed and delivered in ways that produce positive health impacts for specific populations.
This position offers an excellent opportunity to develop an independent research program with collaborative interactions in a multidisciplinary environment that encompasses the Department of Community Health Sciences, the O’Brien Institute for Public Health, the broader University, Alberta Health Services, governmental agencies and non-governmental organizations.
As a faculty member this role includes 75% protected time for research, complemented by contributions in education, mentorship, and administrative service / leadership. Teaching duties will include undergraduate- and/or graduate-level courses within the Department of Community Health Sciences. The successful candidate will be expected to apply and be successful at provincial national grant agencies such as Alberta Innovates – Health Solutions (AI-HS), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).
Qualifications include a PhD (or equivalent), with at least 2-3 years of experience in research or research-related roles beyond the PhD, and a proven record of excellence in research as demonstrated by scholarly publications and the ability to compete successfully for funding.
