Funding Launch: September 2014
Registration Deadline: February 3, 2015
Application Deadline: April 1, 2015
Anticipated Funding Start: July 1, 2015
This September, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) will launch the eHealth Innovations Partnership Program (eHIPP), a collaborative funding opportunity designed to create a new generation of cost-effective patient- and population-centered health care solutions. eHIPP will support partnerships between Canadian health technology companies and ‘innovation communities '– local/regional healthcare delivery settings, such as hospitals, communities, school boards/post-secondary institutions – to co-design and integrate innovative eHealth solutions that deliver real-world health care value. These funds will support pragmatic trials of new eHealth technologies in innovation community test beds that have the capacity and desire to integrate eHealth innovations into real-world service delivery.
eHIPP is the first phase of the eHealth Innovations Initiative and is co-led by the Institute for Health Services and Policy Research (IHSPR) and the Institute of Aging (IA) in conjunction with the Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction (INMHA); and the Institute for Human Development, Child and Youth Health
The objectives of eHIPP are to:
1. Identify patient-oriented eHealth solutions that will improve health outcomes, patient experience, and lower the cost of care along the continuum for two eHIPP priority areas:
- Early identification of, and intervention for youth and adolescents (11-25 years of age) with mental health conditions
- Support of seniors with complex care needs in their homes
2. Foster partnerships between innovation communities and health technology companies to co-develop and evaluate the clinical benefit and cost-effectiveness of eHealth solutions in clinical- and population health-environments; these evaluations will take the form of cluster randomized, and/or randomized controlled trials (level 1 evidence) so as to assist in the subsequent commercialization of successful innovations
eHIPP will fund individual grants of up to $1.5 million over four years, with half of this funding coming from health technology partners, economic development agencies, and other health funding agencies. CIHR will match these partnership funds on a 1:1 basis up to a maximum of $750,000. Partnership funds previously secured for innovation development are considered eligible if received within 18 months of the funding start date (July 1, 2015).
Support for Partnership Development
To facilitate the formation of partnerships between innovation communities and health technology companies, a series of regional workshops will occur during the fall and winter of 2014. Webinars will also be held during this timeframe to provide information for prospective applicants to enhance the competitiveness of their applications.
